Finding the right sleeping bag for your baby isn't always easy. The selection is huge: should it be a winter sleeping bag, a summer sleeping bag, or a down sleeping bag? What does TOG mean, and what size does my child need? We want to shed some light on the subject!
A baby sleeping bag is now considered essential for your baby. And for good reason: a sleeping bag has many advantages over a blanket. Above all, it's about safety. With a baby sleeping bag, you can always be sure that your baby's face remains uncovered and they can breathe freely. It also can't be easily kicked off, keeping your little one warm and secure without restricting their movement. A baby sleeping bag is therefore the ideal bedding item.
Many new parents wonder what size sleeping bag they need for their child. The rule is: don't let your baby grow into it. Otherwise, a baby sleeping bag can have the same effect as a blanket and pose the same risks. You can find many helpful formulas online to determine the right size. If your baby looks very small, it's better to choose a smaller size.
Your baby needs a sleeping bag in both summer and winter. A summer sleeping bag is thinner than a winter sleeping bag. Generally, the thickness of the sleeping bag is an important factor when choosing a baby sleeping bag. For this reason, there is a unit of measurement for it. The thickness is indicated in TOG (Total Outdoor Weight), which is a measure of the thermal resistance of textile products. The higher the TOG number, the warmer the sleeping bag.
The following TOG sizes are available:
0.2 TOG – 0.3 TOG is a completely unlined summer sleeping bag for room temperatures above 24°C and is particularly suitable for summer.
1.0 TOG are lightly padded, sleeveless baby sleeping bags for room temperatures between 21-24°C.
2.5 TOG are padded baby sleeping bags without sleeves for room temperatures between 16 - 21° C.
A baby sleeping bag should also be made of high-quality, non-toxic materials, as your child spends a lot of time in direct contact with it. Many models are made of organic cotton or viscose from bamboo fibers. These fabrics are particularly breathable and gentle on the skin.
Your baby's sleepwear depends heavily on the season. In summer, a light bodysuit is sufficient, while in winter, pajamas are appropriate. To avoid overheating, you should always check your baby's temperature. The back of their neck should be neither too cold nor sweaty and damp. Furthermore, your baby should not wear a hat while sleeping, as this can lead to overheating.
The ideal sleeping temperature for your baby during the day is 18–20°C. At night, it can be a little cooler; 16–18°C is recommended. This can be difficult to achieve, especially in summer. Therefore, it's best to use a summer sleeping bag. There should also be no drafts in the room or around the bed. No pillows should be used, and no large soft toys should be in your baby's bed.
